| Common Name | Oriental Lily |
| Botanical Name | Lilician Li Giaceae |
| Origin | These beautiful lilies have been grown in gardens for over 3000 years |
| Description | Lilies have been developed over the last 40 years and perhaps no other flower has gained popularity as a cut flower all over the world. The lily is a scented flower which opens in a 6 petal bloom almost 20 cm in diameter. These flowers are however at the top end of the flower spectrum. The white "Casablanca" lily is the most popular but there are also over a dozen pink orientals ranging from the most delicate sheer pink to a deeply shaded saturated magenta with many shades in between. |
| Where Grown | Orientals have been longer in cultivation than possibly any other plant in the world and are still grown world-wide |
| Availability | Orientals are available all year round but prices vary with both variety and supply and demand. Generally speaking they are more expensive in winter |
| Use In Flower Arrangements |
Equally suited to vase presentation or oasis arrangements. The lilly lasts well and fills the home or office with its "heady" fragrance. It is a relatively tall flower and is used in arrangements that require some height |
| Caring For Your Flowers | Will last for up to 10 days with good care. As the flower opens it is always best to remove the pollen from the stamen before it has a chance to stain anything it brushes against or falls on e.g. fabric, carpet or clothing |
More About Oriental Lillies & Cut Oriental Lily Care...
Lilies are a symbol of purity, fertility and new life. Lilies are a versatile flower and suit many special occasions. They are suitable for wedding bouquets, flowers to send to new parents or to commemorate an engagement but to also recognise someone’s death and are often used as a funeral flower or part of a funeral arrangement. The symbolism behind using lilies at funerals is that they represent resurrection.
To preserve your lilies when they are delivered, use a clean vase or container and fill it with lukewarm tap water. Remove any water vials which may have been shipped with your lilies. These provide only a temporary water source to keep the flowers fresh during delivery.
Remove any foliage from the lilies that will be below the waterline of the container, being careful not to scrape or cut through the green bark of the stems. Air may enter stems at such injuries, blocking water uptake. Leaves left under water will cause bacteria to develop and will significantly shorten the life of your lilies.
Keep in mind that the pollinating limbs of the flower often have thick orange pollen which can brush and stain clothing and materials. Simply remove or wipe the pollen off the anthers to relieve any stain or allergy issues. Keep lilies in a cool area of the home preferably out of constant sunlight.
The length of time lilies remain fresh and blooming is highly subjective to the species of lily. For instance, lilies of the valley will only stay rigid for a couple of days, calla lilies generally last up to 7 days, while oriental lilies can last up to 2 weeks if maintained properly.
Check your lilies daily and add more preservative and fresh water as needed. The water should be changed every 3 to 4 days and the lilies stems should be recut to extend the life of the flowers. With tender loving care, lilies can last 7-10 days with appropriate care.
