Orchids always convey timeless elegance and style...

The orchid is a beautiful and elegant flower. The orchid’s name is derived from the Greek "órkhis", literally meaning "testicle", because its root has a similar shape. Orchids have long been a symbol of seduction and eroticism. Researchers place the arrival of orchids between 76 and 84 million years ago.

Orchids are part of the Orchidaceae family of plants. It is currently believed to be the second largest family of flowering plants (only the Asteraceae is larger and roses are part of these species), with between 21,950 and 26,049 currently accepted species. Orchids come in a huge range of colours and vary in form and size.

Despite its sensual reputation, with so many different varieties of orchids, not only can you give them to your partner or a loved one, you can also give orchids to your colleagues, new parents or as a thank you present. Orchids can proudly hold their own or be mixed with different varieties of flowers.

More About Orchids & Caring For Cut Orchids

While all cut flowers should be handled with delicate care, orchids are a very fragile flower and should be handled delicately to avoid any bruising or damage. When handling orchids, you should use wet hands or wet gloves.

To preserve your flowers, fresh cut orchids should be handled as little as possible. Remove any water vials which may have been shipped with your roses. These provide only a temporary water source during delivery.

Place the stem in a sink or wide container filled with lukewarm water. It is important to cut the stems at an angle and to get them into a water mix immediately. A water mix should include flower food that helps the plant survive far longer than water without such preservatives.
When handling your fresh cut orchids it is extremely important that you do not break off any of the flowers ‘limbs’ or pollinia as it will subsequently cause your fresh cut orchids to die.

Orchids thrive on indirect sunlight and humid environments. Try to be conscious of where you’re positioning the arrangement of orchids to extend the lifespan of the cut flowers and place away from fresh fruit which speeds up the aging process of the plant.

Check your orchids daily and add more preservative and fresh water as needed. The water should be changed every 3 to 4 days and the orchid stems should be recut to maximise the life of the flowers. Orchids can last 6-12 days but by spraying fresh water on your orchids, it can help refresh the blooms and make your flowers last longer.
