Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China as a flowering herb as far back as the 15th century BC. As an herb, it was believed to have the power of life. Chrysanthemum comes from the Greek 'Chrys' meaning golden (the colour of the original flowers), and 'anthemon', meaning flower. A Chinese philosopher once said “If you want be happy for a lifetime, grow chrysanthemums." The flower was introduced into Japan probably in the 8th century AD, and the Emperor adopted the flower as his official seal. An ancient Chinese city (Xiaolan Town of Zhongshan City) was named Ju-Xian, meaning "chrysanthemum city" to honour the flower. There is a "Festival of Happiness" in Japan that celebrates the flower. Chrysanthemums, often called mums or chrysanths, are a genus (Chrysanthemum) of about 30 species of perennial flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, the same plant family as roses. Colours range from vibrant lime green to rich red, brown and yellow, not forgetting of course pinks, whites and other pale pastel colours.

Chrysanthemums primarily symbolise love, affection and truth but in some regions, chrysanthemum symbolises bereavement. Like roses, the colour is also an important feature in distinguishing the meaning of the flower. Red chrysanthemums are signs of pure love whereas the yellow chrysanthemum signifies platonic friendship or unrequited love. White chrysanthemums are said to convey truth and reality and used for funerals.

Chrysanthemums will typically come with closed buds, ready to bloom within a few days of arrival. To preserve your flowers when they are delivered, use a clean vase or container and fill it with lukewarm tap water. Remove any water vials which may have been shipped with your chrysanthemums. These provide only a temporary water source during delivery.

Add the flower food which came with your bouquet to the vase that contains your chrysanthemums sunflowers with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacterial growth, aids in keeping vase water clear, and feeds your flowers and foliages insuring a longer vase life.

If you wish to prolong the life of your flowers as long as possible, keep in mind that chrysanthemums are a sun-loving plant which thrives on fresh air. You can expect up to a week from bud to full bloom.

Check your chrysanthemums daily and add more preservative and fresh water as needed. The water should be changed every 3 to 4 days and the chrysanthemum stems should be recut to prolong the life of the flowers. Chrysanthemums can last 6-12 days with appropriate care.
