More About Calla Lillies & Cut Calla Lily Care...

Lilies are a symbol of purity, fertility and new life. Lilies are a versatile flower and suit many special occasions. They are suitable for wedding bouquets, flowers to send to new parents or to commemorate an engagement but to also recognise someone’s death and are often used as a funeral flower or part of a funeral arrangement. The symbolism behind using lilies at funerals is that they represent resurrection.

To preserve your lilies when they are delivered, use a clean vase or container and fill it with lukewarm tap water. Remove any water vials which may have been shipped with your lilies. These provide only a temporary water source to keep the flowers fresh during delivery.

Remove any foliage from the lilies that will be below the waterline of the container, being careful not to scrape or cut through the green bark of the stems. Air may enter stems at such injuries, blocking water uptake. Leaves left under water will cause bacteria to develop and will significantly shorten the life of your lilies.

Keep in mind that the pollinating limbs of the flower often have thick orange pollen which can brush and stain clothing and materials. Simply remove or wipe the pollen off the anthers to relieve any stain or allergy issues. Keep lilies in a cool area of the home preferably out of constant sunlight.

The length of time lilies remain fresh and blooming is highly subjective to the species of lily. For instance, lilies of the valley will only stay rigid for a couple of days, calla lilies generally last up to 7 days, while Calla lilies can last up to 2 weeks if maintained properly.

Check your lilies daily and add more preservative and fresh water as needed. The water should be changed every 3 to 4 days and the lilies stems should be recut to extend the life of the flowers. With tender loving care, lilies can last 7-10 days with appropriate care.
